Welcome to Assam Seva Samiti

A Legacy of Compassion. A Mission of Service.

Founded in 1952, Assam Seva Samiti stands as one of the oldest and most dedicated voluntary organizations in Northeast India. With a legacy rooted in the ideals of the Indian freedom movement, we have continuously served the marginalized, the impoverished, and the forgotten with unwavering commitment. Headquartered at Gopinath Nagar in Guwahati, our impact reaches far and wide across the state of Assam, touching thousands of lives through our welfare initiatives.

Our Founding: The Dream of B.K. Bhandari

Our journey began with the visionary leadership of Late Shri B.K. Bhandari, a freedom fighter and social reformer whose dedication to the welfare of the underserved was inspired by national icons like Mahatma Gandhi, Amritlal Bithalbhai, and Thakkar Bappa. Recognizing his extraordinary humanitarian work in South India, Bhandari was encouraged by Gandhi ji and Thakkar Bappa to move to Assam in 1935 to continue his mission.

In 1952, alongside prominent leaders such as Dr. Harekrishna Das, Loknayak Ameo Kumar Das, Vinay Kumar Guha, Mahendra Mohan Chowdhury, and Bimala Prasad Chaliha, Bhandari laid the foundation of Assam Seva Samiti. The idea was simple yet revolutionary: to build a voluntary platform that addressed the needs of Assam’s most vulnerable populations.

Our Evolution

From its humble beginnings in Shillong at the official residence of the then Chief Minister Bishnuram Medhi, Assam Seva Samiti evolved into a beacon of hope for thousands. Initially focused on leprosy prevention and rehabilitation, our activities quickly expanded to include education, vocational training, child care, disaster relief, women’s empowerment, animal welfare, and community development.

After B.K. Bhandari’s untimely demise in 1952, Professor Ram Charan Das, another stalwart social worker, assumed the role of General Secretary and served the organization for nearly three decades. Under his stewardship, Assam Seva Samiti expanded its outreach across the state, creating permanent welfare centers and institutions that remain active even today.
