Welfare Centres Operated by Assam Seva Samiti Real Hope & Swift Support
Empowering Communities, Building Futures
Assam Seva Samiti has long championed the cause of inclusive development and social welfare across Assam. At the heart of this mission are its Welfare Centres—community-focused establishments offering education, skill development, healthcare, and livelihood support. Spread across various districts, these centres operate on government-allotted lands and aim to uplift the underprivileged by equipping them with tools for self-reliance and empowerment. Some centres are currently active, while others await revitalization through fresh proposals and renewed community collaboration.
1. Saboti Welfare Centre, North Lakhimpur District
Situated on 22 bighas of fertile land and an additional 6 bighas reserved as office space, the Saboti Welfare Centre was once a nucleus of educational development. It played a crucial role in establishing several high schools and higher secondary schools that still benefit the region.
Current Status:
- No staff currently stationed.
- Awaiting new development initiatives and resource mobilization.
2. Majbat Welfare Centre, Udalguri District
Initially founded as a Carpentry Training Centre, Majbat has evolved through collaboration between Assam Seva Samiti and local NGOs. Leadership from the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) has since taken up essential responsibilities including infrastructure development.
Ongoing Support:
- One associate employee manages and supports existing programs.
- Recent projects include housing and boundary wall construction.
3. Ghoramari Welfare Centre, Sonitpur District
This centre aimed to empower rural youth through carpentry training. Situated on 3 bighas of government-allotted land, it previously served as a valuable hub for vocational skill-building.
Present Condition:
- Currently inactive.
- Proposals submitted for reactivation with modern vocational schemes.
4. Behali Welfare Centre, Sonitpur District
The Behali Welfare Centre rests on 9 bighas of land and includes three Assam-type houses still in usable condition. Despite the potential for growth, development plans have been delayed.
Administrative Developments:
- A proposed scheme is yet to be implemented.
- Based on caretaker Mr. Kamini Sarma’s recommendations, the previous committee has been dissolved. A new governing body is in formation.
5. Bokakhat Welfare Centre, Golaghat District
Bokakhat once bustled with activity. It operated a coinage training unit, sewing centre, and even hosted an AIDS Prevention Centre backed by the AIDS Control Society.
Current and Upcoming Developments:
- 8 bighas partially leased to SDPO Bokakhat Office.
- 9 roadside shop units under construction (6 completed).
- Oversight and handover managed by Shri Indreswar Sarma, Treasurer of Assam Seva Samiti.
6. Barhapjan Welfare Centre, Tinsukia District
Spread over 8 bighas, the Barhapjan Welfare Centre previously offered weaving training to local women, empowering them with livelihood skills.
Current Use & Future Plans:
- Now inhabited by families of former employees.
- Assam Seva Samiti is exploring schemes to reclaim and repurpose the space for community benefit.
7. Shishu Mangal Kendra, Noonmati, Guwahati
Founded in 1976, this centre served as a children’s home for 100 orphaned boys, providing education and shelter through four residential units. Many of its alumni have grown into successful professionals across sectors.
Current Status:
- Presently houses only 10 children per unit.
- Functioned under the Juvenile Justice (J.J.) Act.
- Ceased operations as of June 13, 2024.

- Introduction of computer literacy, adult education, and mushroom cultivation programs.
Cultural & Commemorative Observances
Beyond infrastructure and training, Assam Seva Samiti remains committed to nurturing its cultural legacy and the values set forth by its founder, Late Shri B.K. Bhandari. These annual events instill a sense of pride and community spirit among residents:
- Republic Day Celebrations
- Independence Day Programs
- Death Anniversary Observance of Shri B.K. Bhandari
These gatherings serve not only to honor the past but also to inspire a shared vision for the future rooted in unity, service, and self-reliance.
Looking Ahead
Each Welfare Centre tells a story—of resilience, hope, and community strength. Assam Seva Samiti continues its unwavering mission to revive dormant centres, introduce new programs, and empower the underserved through skill-building and social integration.
With renewed support and strategic planning, these centres are poised to transform into thriving hubs of community-led development in the years to come.
